So in this article, we are going to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of sublimation printing . By doing so, you will be aware of the dark or negatives of this art and you will find it helpful while selecting. So let’s get started!
Advantages of Sublimation Printing:
The benefits of sublimation printing are as follows;
- Simple & easy to learn: It is so simple to do it. And its learning process is simple. You can learn it in very few days as it provides you with a very short learning curve.
- Allows variety in substrate/ Versatile: It allows you to print on so many no. of substrates and hard surfaces also. Like mugs, tumblers, canvases, shirts/t-shirts and the list goes on.
- Provide with the many no. of colour scheme: It offers you so many colours. By using a four-coloured colour scheme i.e. CMYK scheme, you can print your art with unlimited colours and art also.
- Longevity: Sublimation printing provides you with a long durable print. Sublimation printing offers an exceptionally long-lasting and durable print because the process involves transferring dye onto a material, typically polyester through the application of heat, which allows the dye to permeate the fabric fibres at a molecular level. Which resulted in a vibrant, full-colour image that resists fading, cracking and peeling even after extensive use and repeated washing.
- Fast: The sublimation printing process is fast compared to any other printing. It is fast enough that you can finish your order in a day.
- Cost-Effective: It provides a low/ reasonable price. Having high working efficiency. Also, it does not require so much to set up. If you want to complete the orders urgently whether it will be big or small, sublimation printing always provides you with cost-effectiveness and efficiency without any adjustment or compromise in the quality of the printing.
- Vibrant Colours: Sublimation printing is known for its vibrant colours. In this process, the dye after heating is converted into the gas by the application of heat and sticks directly onto the fibres. Which makes its colours so bright. You just fell in love with it. You can achieve a very high level of detail and vibrancy with this method.
- Environment Friendly: The sublimation printing process is totally environment-friendly. It does not exploit any resources or harm the environment.
- Comfort: It provides you with comfort. And your question is ‘How?’. You can blast your art with sublimation printing from the comfort of your home as it does not require any big space for the setup.
- Low Minimum: You can start your sublimation art business with a very low/zero cost.

Disadvantages of Sublimation Printing:
The disadvantages of sublimation printing are as follows;
- Limited to the polyester: Sublimation explodes only on the 100% polyester substrate or the cloth with 2/3rd of the polyester made. It can’t do well on the 100% cotton material.
- Limited colour in substrate: Sublimation printing does well on the white or the light-coloured substrate. Black or dark-coloured substrates can’t be sublimated directly.
- Substrate selection: You have to be very careful while choosing a substrate for the sublimation. You have to pick the substrate which is labelled as the sublimation blank. Otherwise, it won’t work.
- Effect of direct sunlight: The product loses its colour when exposed to direct sunlight for a long duration.
- Equipment Requirement: Sublimation printing requires specialised equipment.
- Heat Sensitive: Sublimation printing is a heat-sensitive process as it affects the quality of the printing. So maintaining the required quantity of heat is essential and it is somewhat difficult.
